In a groundbreaking move, ACI Seed pioneered the commercial launch of two high-yielding wheat varieties from the private sector under the brand names "ACI Gom 1" and "ACI Gom 2" in the fiscal year 2023-24. These varieties have been meticulously introduced into the agricultural landscape after undergoing multiple trials and demonstrations in wheat-centric regions across Bangladesh.
ACI Gom 1 boasts a remarkable yield potential of 5.8 MT per hectare, with a gluten content of 32.4% and a protein content of 13%, alongside a harvesting duration of 105-110 days. Similarly, ACI Gom 2 exhibits a substantial yield potential of 5.6 MT per hectare, with a gluten content of 28.9%, a protein content of 12.9%, and a harvesting duration of 110-115 days.
Wheat is Bangladesh's second staple crop, with annual consumption nearing 8.5 million MT and growing steadily at 5-6% annually. However, local production, at 1.2 million MT in FY2022-23, meets only 14-15% of demand, highlighting the urgent need to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.
ACI Seed's development of advanced wheat varieties with high gluten content is a significant breakthrough for Bangladesh's bakery and confectionery industries. These sectors have long struggled with low gluten content in local varieties, leading to heavy dependence on imported wheat. By addressing this issue, Bangladesh strengthens its resilience against market fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, fostering a more sustainable food system.
